Sculpting Your Own World: A Beginner’s Guide to Landscapes

Welcome, future island creator! Today, we are going to turn flat ground into a real world. We will build a mountain, dig a cave, and paint a grassy path.

You do not need any code for this. You just need your imagination and the Landscape tools. Let’s make some magic!

What You'll Learn

  • How to pick up your digital "clay" tools.
  • The difference between Sculpting (shape) and Painting (color).
  • How to make a smooth hill and a deep hole.
  • How to save your hard work so you can play it.

How It Works

Think of your Fortnite island like a giant box of modeling clay. At first, the clay is flat. It looks like a table. But you can squish it, roll it, and paint it.

In UEFN (Unreal Editor for Fortnite), we have special tools for this. They are called Landscape Tools.

The Three Main Modes

Imagine you have a magic paintbrush and a magic sculpting knife.

  1. Sculpt Mode: This is your sculpting knife. You use it to push the ground up or pull it down. It changes the height of the land. You can make mountains, valleys, and caves.
  2. Paint Mode: This is your paintbrush. You use it to change the color of the ground. You can paint grass, sand, or rocks. It does not change the shape. It only changes how it looks.
  3. Manage Mode: This is your toolbox. You use it to add new colors or fix big mistakes. You usually don’t need this right away.

The Brush

When you use Sculpt or Paint mode, you see a circle on the ground. This is your Brush.

  • Size: Makes the brush bigger or smaller.
  • Strength: Makes the brush push harder or softer.

Think of Strength like how hard you press with your finger. A low strength is a gentle tap. A high strength is a big push.

Let's Build It

We are going to build a small hill with grass on top. Follow these steps in UEFN.

Step 1: Open the Tools

  1. Open your project in UEFN.
  2. Look at the top menu bar. Find the button that says Landscape.
  3. Click it. A toolbar will appear.

Step 2: Sculpt a Hill

Let’s make a bump in the ground.

  1. Click the Sculpt icon in the Landscape toolbar. It looks like a hand shaping clay.
  2. Move your mouse over the flat ground. You will see a circle.
  3. Hold down the Left Mouse Button.
  4. Move your mouse slowly. Watch the ground rise up!
  5. Try making a round hill. Keep the circle moving in circles.

Tip: If you go too high, hold Shift and click to pull the ground down.

Step 3: Paint Grass

Now let’s make it look nice.

  1. Click the Paint icon in the Landscape toolbar. It looks like a paint roller.
  2. In the menu that pops up, find Grass.
  3. Click on the grass texture.
  4. Click and drag your mouse over the hill you just made.
  5. The dirt turns into green grass!

Tip: You can paint over the dirt too. It’s your world!

Step 4: Smooth It Out

The hill might look bumpy. Let’s make it smooth.

  1. Stay in Sculpt mode.
  2. Find the Smooth tool in the toolbar. It looks like a smoothing iron.
  3. Drag your mouse over the hill.
  4. The sharp bumps will turn into a gentle slope.

Step 5: Save Your Work

Always save your island!

  1. Press Ctrl + S on your keyboard.
  2. Or click the Save icon in the top corner.

Now you can hit Play to walk on your hill!

Try It Yourself

You made a hill. Now try this challenge:

The Cave Challenge: Can you make a tunnel through the hill?

  • Hint: Use the Sculpt tool. Hold Shift to dig down. Make a hole big enough to walk through. Then paint the inside with rock color.

Don’t worry if it looks messy at first. You can always Smooth it out again!

Recap

You just learned how to shape the world.

  1. Sculpt changes the shape (up and down).
  2. Paint changes the color (grass, sand, rock).
  3. Use the Brush size and Strength to control your edits.

You are now a landscape artist. Go build something amazing!
